Hate crimes have increased 300% towards Sikhs in the last year alone. We all need to be alert and more importantly to show America who we are. Read below to find the best way to change someone from saying, “I think Sikh is atype of bird” to saying, “I’m impressed and want to have Sikh friends in my neighborhood.”

The take-aways from that research is that US citizens repond best to messages that connect Sikhi with core Amerian values and the American story

1. Connect Core Sikh Values With The American Revolution
This first message connecting core Sikh values with the American Revolution was something that SikhNet used with very positive effect in the period following 9-11. And in the survey done, it was considered the most important message in terms of educating Americans about the Sikh identity.
2. Sikhs Are Part Of The American Dream
Like the Irish, Italians, and Chinese before them, Sikhs immigrated to this country seeking a chance to build a better life for their families through hard work.
3. The Sikh Turban Represents American Values
For the last 500 years, many Sikhs around the world have worn the turban as an expression of their faith and their commitment to serve humanity.
4. Sikhs In The Military
Sikhs have a long history of serving in the US armed forces with honor. Read more here
You can use the information above as your talking points when telling people about Sikhism. In addition it’s important to be active in your community.
Be Known For Your Service
The study found that other Americans perceived the Sikh community as insular and not concerned with their wider communities. This is seen when Sikhs do seva for each other, their Gurdwara, or the Khalsa schools, but no one else.
Sikhi is Unknown in The USA
This lack of participation in the wider community results in a lack of knowledge about the Sikh community and faith as well. While US citizens know the founders of other religions, such as Jesus Christ, Buddha, and Mohammed, most US citizens have never heard of Guru Nanak.
The report recommends that Sikh Americans participate in Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, the Rotary Club, or a local political party.
